10 Beats United

Beats are all around us. Almost all music begins with a beat and as such it’s a musical term rather than a genre. But the term is widely associated with a style whose rhythmic basis is constructed with drum loops and breaks which are usually sampled from Soul or Funk tracks at a slower tempo between 80-110 bmp.

Nearly all hip-hop and down-tempo music falls into that category. Also a huge number of slower electronica tracks follow the same or similar patterns. The rise of digital sound processing has also brought about different and complex techniques in beat-making. I tried to bring together various examples from old school groovy breaks to abstract beats with hip-hop vocals for this podcast.  Let the beat go on!
